Nirvana is probably the best band of the 90s, and unquestionably the most influential. They're also my personal favorite band. They were the first band I really 'got into' with Nevermind being the third 'real' cd I ever recieved (if you count Ren and Stimpy's "You Eediot!" as a 'real' CD, then Nevermind was my fourth.) Nirvana had so much going for them, but the most important was they were led by the most gifted singer-songwriter since, uh, Lennon or McCartney - Kurt Cobain. Krist Novoselic was always a steady sideman to Cobain, and played some great bass guitar too. When Dave Grohl, super-talented musician himself, joined on drums and backing vocals, Nirvana were unbeatable. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit" has pretty much become my generation's anthem. Although the band's life was breif, the quantity and quality of music they put out during that brief lifetime was unbelievable. Check out my Nirvana page.

Do I even need to write about The Beatles? They're the best band of all time, and will probably continue to be until the end of popular music. They wrote the best music (each of them wrote a song you know.) While they didn't have virtuosic musicianship, when the four of them played together it was magic. They could write in just about any style of music (and do it well) and their excellence was consistant from their first to their last album. Thirty years after breaking up, they held a number-one album all around the world that contained no new music! Seperatly, The Beatles are amazing musicians. But together, it only goes to show, there is no better. More than a quarter-century after his death, John Lennon was reunited with the three remaining Beatles on "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love." The latter remains my favorite song of all time. Check out my Beatles page.

Okay, okay. You were with me on the first two, but the Backstreet Boys? Yes, dear Stever-fan. I'm not pulling your leg. Alright, so at times they can be pretty 'teeny-boppery,' but hey, so were the early Beatles! These guys are an amazing vocal group who obviously pack a huge pop-appeal. What puts them over-and-above is they have access to Max Martin. Mr. Martin is a swedish pop songwriter/producer who has worked on at least 4 BSB songs on each of their albums. His songs account for 12 of BSB's 19 singles (and his recent songwriting partner, Rami, accounts for another one.) Where would the Backstreet Boys be without Max Martin? They'd probably be somewhat successful, they are super-talented performers and vocalists, but they wouldn't be in my top 4. Nobody writes a new pop song like Max Martin and nobody sings a Max Martin song like BSB. Check out my BSB page.

The ultimate rock band - Led Zeppelin. No other band had a musical genius bassist who could also play keyboards and write cool songs like "Black Dog" like John Paul Jones. No other band had the one-two punch of rock-gods Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (ok, Rolling Stones Keith Richards and Mick Jagger and The Who's Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry are great, but I'd take Page on guitar and Plant singing anyday.) But the not-so-secret weapon of Led Zeppelin was drummer John Henry Bonham. I believe him to be not just the greatest drummer of rock, but of all time. Of course, Led Zep had gifted songwriting abilities and put on a great show throughout their career. In my opinion, if you could focus all energies and create 'The Ultimate' rock-band consisting of the greatest guitarist, vocalist, drummer, and bassist available (in the 70s) you'd get Led Zeppelin. Check out my Zeppelin page.
