A concert-like performance for MTV's 120 minutes show. Songs from the show were shown on MTV individually, but never together. Most of the show was found circulating on the internet recently, including "On a Plain" and "Stain" from the soundcheck. I have no clue what the "Unknown" song from the soundcheck is, considering I've neither heard it nor read any information about it.

1st SNL Television Taping
(January 11, 1992)
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Territorial Pissings
The band's first performance on the popular comedy-skit show, Saturday Night Live. Rob Morrow was the host. Because of the band kissing during the live end-of-show credits, the credits were retaped. I'm lucky to have the original show credits considering all rebroadcasts use the retaped credits.

Come As You Are Video Shoot
(January 19-22, 1992)
Come As You Are
The video shoot took a few days. The first was spent on filming in a nearby park, the others, in an abandoned-mansion-looking set. The band purposefully wanted their faces blurred by water, as a response to the huge media frenzy that the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video created.

Laundry Room Sessions
(April 7, 1992)
Oh, the Guilt
Curmudgeon
Return of the Rat
Nirvana's only sessions at Dave's familiar studio, the Laundry Room. He recorded here many times, like for his Pocketwatch demos (which included an early "Marigold.") "Oh, the Guilt" was released as a split single with the Jesus Lizard on the Touch and Go label. "Curmudgeon" was a B-side for the Lithium Single and "Return of the Rat" was released on the With The Lights Out box set.

The Star-Spangled Banner
This is quite possibly Nirvana's best performance ever. There had been many talks of the band breaking up, considering they hadn't performed since February, along with the continuing drug taking of Kurt. He and Courtney had married, so that added other tensions as well... The performance was fierce with many classic and/or funny moments. Kurt was rolled out in a wheelchair wearing a hospital gown, as a joke on the talk about his drug-use (which was true, despite his denials) and he launched into a shakey, but hilarious cover of Bette Midler's "The Rose." A small section of "More Than a Feeling" opened up "Smells Like Teen Spirit," a joke on the critics' comparison of the two songs. "The Rose," "Lithium," and "The Star-Spangled Banner" were released on the Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! home video. The full show was released officially on Live At Reading.

MTV Video Music Awards
(September 9, 1992)
Rape Me (intro)
Lithium
Nirvana opened the show with a quick intro of "Rape Me" flowing right into "Lithium." MTV does not show this "Rape Me" intro when it repeats the "Lithium" clip, considering it was a strike on the channel (The band wanted to play the controversial song, but MTV wanted only a hit.) The band won 2 awards. They sent up a Michael Jackson impersonator for the best Alternative Rock Video award (which, unfortunately I've never seen) and collected the Best New Artist award themselves.

In Bloom Video Shoot (October 15, 1992)
In Bloom (suits version)
In Bloom (dresses version)
In Bloom (suits & dresses mix)
Three versions of the In Bloom video were created. The first was with the band dressed like the Beach Boys. The cameras used were 1960s and gave the feeling of it being an old clip from a 1960's Ed Sullivan show. The second was the same set, but Nirvana wore dresses. They abandoned miming to the song early and destroyed the set. The third video was a combination of the two. This is the most popular version and the one that won the 1993 MTV VMA for Best Alternative Video.

Demos created for the In Utero album, with Bleach's producer Jack Endino. Apart from "Rape Me," which was officially released on the With The Lights Out box set, all songs were instrumental only.

The Priest They Called Him Session
(November 1992)
jam
This "Jam" was combined with a William S. Burrough's spoken word recording and released officially on The Priest They Called Him single.

This chronology is in no way complete, and is based on my own stash of Nirvana recordings (although I've got tons more live stuff than just what's on these few pages.) Material I have in one form or another is in Gold. Material I'm missing is in white.
