Sappy Sessions (January 2-3, 1990)
Sappy
The first studio recording of my favorite Nirvana song. Jack Endino, producer, refered to this as a "boring" song, and I could never understand! ...That is until it was finally released on Sliver: The Best of the Box. It's definitely nowhere near as good as it would get.

Evergreen Sessions (March 20, 1990)

Big Cheese (take 1)
Big Cheese (take 2)
Floyd the Barber
The second Nirvana-produced videos. These were recorded with a student from the nearby Evergreen State College video department. The band played live in front of a screen that played scenes from old horror movies, funny 70's and 80's commericals, and video collages. Other special video effects were used as well.

Smart Studio Demos (April 2-6, 1990)
Breed
Dive
Here She Comes Now
In Bloom
Lithium
Polly
Sappy
Stay Away
An important and amazing Nirvana recording session. Their first recordings of songs for the huge Nevermind ("Polly" from this session actually made it onto the final album) along with the producer, Butch Vig. "Dive" made it out onto Incesticide. "In Bloom," "Here She Comes Now" and "Stay Away" (then known as "Pay to Play") were released on With The Lights Out. "Lithium" is a cool mix of acoustic-verses/electric-choruses not found anywhere else, and the version of "Sappy" is amazing.

Sliver Sessions (July 11 & 24, 1990)
Sliver
With short-term drummer Dan Peters on loan from Mudhoney, Nirvana snuck into the studio and borrowed equipment to record this song. Released on Incesticide.

1st Pocketwatch Sessions (April 1990)
Pokey the Little Puppy
Petrol CB
Friend of a Friend
Throwing Needles
Just Another Story About Skeeter Thompson
Color Pictures of a Marigold
Before joining Nirvana, Dave Grohl was a well-known drummer around the DC hardcore scene. While Nirvana were recording their Smart Studio Demos, he was with a friend recoring the first of his Late! Pocketwatch demos. He played all instruments and sang. "Color Pictures of a Marigold" eventually made it onto the B-Side of the Heart-Shaped Box Single. "Friend of a Friend" was re-done for the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor album.

Kurt on KAOS (September 25, 1990)
Opinion
Lithium
Been a Son
Kurt, with acoustic in hand, showed up on the Boy Meets Girl show on a local college's radio. Some small talk was between the solo songs. All three eventually found release on the With The Lights Out box set.

2nd John Peel Session (October 21, 1990)
D-7
Molly's Lips
Son of a Gun
Turnaround
Nirvana's second John Peel session was their weirdest, and interestingly, least rare. All 4 songs found official release. "D-7" was found on the Harmoaning EP released in Austrailia and Japan. The other three ended up on Incesticide.

This chronology is in no way complete, and is based on my own stash of Nirvana recordings (although I've got tons more live stuff than just what's on these few pages.) Material I have in one form or another is in Gold. Material I'm missing is in white.
