stressedCurrent Music| BSB - I Still... ![]() Right now I'm updating while a really cool (and really silly) movie is on in the background - Batman Forever. I know many people will disagree with me on it's coolness factor, but i'm used to that! Val Kilmer and Chris O'Donnell are alright as the dynamic duo, but they're no Adam West & Burt Ward. So a little over a week ago, SunChase (the apartment complex i'm almost done living in) posted a note on my door saying that they were going to bring me to court if i didnt pay them back rent. oops! i'm pretty bad at keeping up on these things - i stopped sending them checks over a year ago. i'm down to money orders just to PROVE that the money's there. Anyways i just got finished paying off their blood money, only to find out that i need to pay $150 to put the electric bill into my name, since flubes is leaving in 2 weeks. Nevermind that i'm leaving in a little over a month... Anyways luckily i talked to the company and they'll just put it on my next bill - which will be AFTER i get paid, so i'll actually have money to pay for it. yay nate and i were driving all over harrisonburg today getting errands done. while in the car he was talking about how he's going to win the lottery and wants me to be his "personal assistant." apparently my pay would be $500 a week. i'd have to live in his house, so rent is free. here are some of the job duties i'd have to do: - hire a gardening staff - learn to ride a motorcycle (optional sidecar) - learn to drive manual - buy groceries - do laundry - re-enact a celebrity suicide once a month - 'do' random people he chooses - obviously/hopefully only girls - have a homing device placed on my person... don't ask where - hunt and kill animals - set-up parties for him to host - many, dumber ones i can't remember in summary, he has absolutely no chance of me becoming his personal assistant. so i think i'll end this post with the ranking of the disney princesses in order of not-hot to really hot. yes, i know they're just cartoons, i understand that. i'm just saying, if jasmine WERE real she'd be pretty hot (and if ariel had legs...)

dorkyCurrent Music| A-Ha - The Living Daylights Because I'm a huge Bond-nut and overwhelming demand from my fans, here's my listing of the James Bond themes in order from not-great to greatest. 21. Gladys Knight - License to Kill. The worst of all Bond tunes. It starts off like it could be cool, incorporating the bond theme in their nicely. Then the verses hit, and it's a bit too 80's adult-contempo. And then the chorus hits, ugh... 20. Lulu - The Man With The Golden Gun. The same way that the previous song, License to Kill, falters because of it's 80s-ness, this one dies a death because of it's 70s-ness. Interesting chord choices at time. Nice bridge. 19. Madonna - Die Another Day. This has been remarked as the worst Bond theme of all time (although as you can see, that's untrue.) It is very 'new' sounding, which is nice, but it's got that horrible new-madonna production. And the 'melody' is hardly there at all. 18. Garbage - The World Is Not Enough. Like Sheryl Crow's song (higher up on this list) Garbage is trying to hard to make a "Bond-sounding" theme song. This one is less-successful than Crow's. (But I can take this song more than Madonna's!) 17. John Barry Orchestra - On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Here's another them that starts out cool, but then gets caught up with trying to sound modern (which at the time, was late 60's, I believe.) One of the few instrumental themes. 16. Rita Coolidge - All Time High. One of the slow Bond themes. It must have been almost impossible to write a song with the title "Octopussy" so this was the main theme. This is the section of the list where Bond songs start getting better. This ones alright. 15. Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World. The second "theme" from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It's in a similar vein to his own "What a Wonderful World," only more 70s-ish. Especially nice bridge/ending. 14. Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only. A slower Bond theme which is very atmospheric. Kinda cool, but it does pick up into a more uptempo, but adult-contempo (read dental-rock) love song. 13. Sheryl Crow - Tomorrow Never Dies. Sheryl tries so hard here to make a "Bond-Sounding" theme song. She may have pulled it off though. The intro sounds like a plane is landing - kinda cool, considering most Bond films involve travel. Nice dichotomy between the slow and heavy sections. Amazing neo-classical bridge. 12. Shirly Bassey - Diamonds Are Forever. Shirly - Queen of the Bond themes. She did no less than 3 bond themes, including this very 70s sounding one. The intro is great, and without Shirly singing, this song would be alot lower on the list. "For when loves go-oo-oo-one..." 11. Matt Monro - From Russia With Love. This was the song that started the trend of a Bond theme song using the title. Not a bad start. A little light, but the feeling of the song is 'exotic,' if not Russian. Great ending. 10. Tom Jones - Thunderball. This song is a little over-the-top, but it works. I mean, come on, it's Tom Jones, how could it NOT be a little over-the-top? Slyly includes the James Bond theme inside, which will become an almost annoying trait in the bond themes. As usual, a great ending. 9. Shirley Bassey - Moonraker. Another atmospheric Bond theme (love that triangle!) Again Shirley Bassey is an asset on this song, although this time the song is pretty good even without her great voice. The ending is AMAZING. This is the part of the list where everything gets REALLY good. 8. Shirley Bassey - Goldfinger. When you think of Shirley Bassey, you think Goldfinger. This song is really well written and with her voice, it just sends it up even more. "Such... a coooold finger..." 7. Tina Turner - Goldeneye. The best of the contemporary Bond themes. Tina Turner sounds like a raspier Shirley Bassey, and the songwriters are the Edge & Bono from U2, so it's quality is all but guaranteed. This is the way Bond songs should be done nowadays. Sheryl Crow, Garbage and Madonna should have taken better notes. 6. Nancy Sinatra - You Only Live Twice. It's sad that when most people think Nancy Sinatra, they think "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'." This song is heads above that 60's novelty hit. Written by Mr. Bond-theme himself, John Barry. Expertly references asian-sounding chords (the movie has scenes in Japan.) 5. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better. Holy crap, where did this song come from. It sounds like no other Bond song, and at the same time fits perfectly. Pulled away from the trend of being a big huge number using the title of the film as it's own title. Carly does fit "the spy who loved me" in the chorus, though. More low-key than most Bond themes, and still manages to outdo them. 4. John Barry Orchestra - James Bond Theme. Alright, I do feel a little weird not having this as number one. It's certainly the most famous, and is really awesome. But it's broadness ranks it a little lower than the 3 above it. It's not Dr. No's theme song... it's James Bond's. Stil awesome, though. 3. Duran Duran - A View To A Kill. This song is super cool, even with the silly sound effects. But that's another reason to like it. The movie itself is silly, but still cool. Nice upward key change from the verses into the chorus - which ultimately makes it a little difficult to move back to the verses. But they make do. 2. A-Ha - The Living Daylights. This song and the previous one by Duran Duran are like sister-songs for me, which only makes sense. They sorta have a similar sound, were back-to-back films, and were done by 80s new-wave-y bands. This one is just a smidge cooler (the vocals definitely help in that category.) The keychange from the verse to the prechorus is so startling in a good way. And then, amazingly, there's another keychange into the chorus, which is great also. Expert. The change back to the verse is alot less confusing than "A View To A Kill." 1. Paul McCartney - Live And Let Die. Ok, I swear. This isn't number one because of who wrote/performed it... well, maybe just a little. But seriously, this is the greatest Bond theme of them all. When you hear it you PICTURE bond, but in a different way than what you picture from James Bond's theme. This is one of Paul McCartney's greatest songs to boot. Ushered in a new James Bond - Roger Moore (who I like more than Connery. I know, Blasphemy!) Comments: stan: My top ten 10. From Russia with Love 09. View to a Kill 08. You Only Live Twice 007. Goldeneye 06. the Living Daylights 05. James Bond Theme (Dr. No) 04. Goldfinger 03. Moonraker 02. Nobody Does it Better (practically tied with #1) 01. Live and Let Die - Stanus

contentCurrent Music| BSB - Siberia Monday, June 13th, 2005 10 pm - watch Backstreet Boys' Behind the Music on VH1 wore BSB shirt Tuesday, June 14th, 2005 2 am - went to Walmart, bought first "Never Gone" out of the box wore BSB shirt Here's my rundown on the album (which is great!) ![]() 1) Incomplete - this one everyone has probably heard. It originally wasnt going to be the first single, if a single at all. One of the members of the band had it on a demo-cd and lost it... and someone in radio eventually got it and started spinning it. So BSB went with it. It's very evenescence to me - except listenable. I wasn't too pleased with it when i first heard it (i had a copy of the radio-leaked spins) but it's grown on me. A little melodramatic. Watching the video with this is better than just the song. I like how the orchestra swells in the intro and chorus are the melodies that are sung in the verses. ![]() 2) Just Want You to Know - Each BSB album preceeding this one had a Max Martin uptempo opener. For some reason, Incomplete is #1 on Never Gone, but at #2 is the Max Martin uptempo that was (possibly) meant for #1. Really cool electronic-sample intro. This song has a writing style Mr. Martin has tried before. When working on Britney Spears' "Overprotected" he writes from the perspective of the artist he's giving the song to. This song is about one of AJ's girlfriends he had when he was young who died. The first part of the chorus sounds like "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson, but other than that it's a new-Martin tune (although, come on, he has his formulas he sticks to... Formulas he invented.) Because it's Max, and because it's his BSB uptempo actually works a little against it. It is no "the Call." It is no "Everybody." It is no "We've Got it Goin' On" or "Larger than Life." It's a new style, and bittersweet in that while i really like it, i miss the ol' Max too... ![]() 3) Crawling Back to You - A very modern-sounding mid-tempo for the BSBers. The verse sounds like it could belong in a Dawson's Creek-like show, which is not that cool, but the chorus is real catchy. It's nice that BSB has decided to update their sound, it works for them. I like the ending where each BSBer sings the title. ![]() 4) Weird World - here's one written by 'the guy from Five For Fighting.' It's real listenable - which is more than i can say about everything else i've heard from this guy - and actually has a nice hook (the "hey-hey-HEY"s.) Not sure why they gave most of the leads to Nick - some change-ups would have made this better. ![]() 5) I Still... - Max Martin's second song on the album starts very much like the Beatles' "She's a Woman." Single notes playing what seem to be on-beats, but what turn out to be off-beats. Nice! This is probably the simplest of Max Martin's songs found here, but at the same time is probably the catchiest. The chorus is very amazing. On each album from BSB, there is a song that is like the BSBers are singing to their audience (In order, We've Got it Goin' On, Everybody, Larger than Life, and Everybody (the only one that isnt written by Martin.)) Here they sing about "still loving the fans, even though it's been awhile," while at the same time sounding like a regular boy-girl-love song. Give me some time, and this song might become my new favorite. ![]() 6) Poster Girl - I heard a crappy-quality live recording of this song, and was very dissapointed. But the studio version relieves all the problems i had with it. it's a very sunny-summer-day, driving-down-the-street song. Grows on you with each listen. cool. ![]() 7) Lose it All - the very beginning of this song sounds like it's going to be another "Crawling back to you" - very tv-soundtrack-sounding. But the verses change, and it sounds almost Bryan Adams-ish. The chorus does, however return to a more modern-sound, but the measures are set up very oddly (for example, the 2nd verse comes in too quick; very Max Martin-ish if i do say so!) which make this more interesting. ![]() 8) Climbing the Walls - The first time i heard the verse melody, i stopped it midway thru, and rewound it just to hear it again. The best of Martin's melodies on this album is found here. Brian refers to this as "I want it that way" on steroids, which is a fitting description. The chorus is nice, but is no comparison to the verses - although being that way, it's such a great hook coming out of the chorus back into verse (of course this is all relative: remember i'm obsessed with everything Max Martin) A leaked demo of this song has more of an acoustic feel, and i'm glad he decided to go back and beef things up a bit. Very interesting orchestral ending (i think Max is nodding to the original reason he wrote this song - it was to be on the soundtrack to Spiderman 2, and wasnt going to be a BSB song. I'm super glad that didnt happen...) ![]() 9) My Beautiful Woman - The first song i heard from what eventually turned into this album. I first heard this in August of 2004. My hopes were soothed after almost 4 years of no new BSB when i heard this rocker. Very (dare i say it?!) Max Martin sounding, if not written by him. The 2nd verse ushurs in a surprise upward keychange. By the time AJ brings us into the second chorus, you're realy digging the ride. And then the bridge hits. ALMOST steals the show much like the bridge of "the call." A 60's sci-fi last chord is tagged onto the ending, making it that much cooler. ![]() 10) Safest Place to Hide - It wouldn't be a Backstreet album if the second side didnt have ballads. Here's one of the big ones. It's nice, and has some interesting chord choices in the chorus. The tinkling piano is a little much for me, tho. Solid melodies, and each BSB'er gets a little piece of the leads. It's a nice album track... which is probably all it'll ever be. ![]() 11) Siberia - I thought "Climbing the Walls" was going to be my favorite (Max Martin, great melody/verses) but I was wrong. The only MM song i hadn't heard from Never Gone, this one, steals first place. When i was reading the tracklisting, i knew this was a Max song. Like "the Call" before it, it screams of his talent even from the title. His other songs here are mid-to-up tempos, so i pretty much knew this one was going to be more "show me the meaning of being lonley-ish" and i was right. It's not produced by Mr. Martin, so it sounds a little different, but it has nice moments production-wise like the church-organ bridge, and the sampled-'riff' that goes on throughout. Great verses as always, and the chorus gets better each time it comes up. Nice fadeout. ![]() 12) Never Gone - Written by Kevin about his deceased father, it's full of emotion. BSB have a trend of making the last song on their albums kinda questionable. Their debut had an uncharacteristicly weak Max Martin song called "Nobody but you." Backstreet's Back had "If i dont have you," which although is a decent song, is basically "i'll never break your heart" part 2. Millenium had the cheese-fest of "the Perfect fan." Black and Blue had the way-too-emotional "how did i fall in love with you." So it only fits that the weakest song on the album - the title track! - is the last one. Not a horrendous song by any measure, but compared to what preceeded it, it stands out in the wrong way. ![]() Conclusion: This is a really good album. Almost equal to Millenium, but in a different way. More adult sounding. New Max Martin sounds. The only problems i have with it are the tendancy for "big bridges" and that it's not the old Backstreet. But at the same time, i'm glad they moved forward in this way. And in case you didnt notice, i'm also glad there are 4 new Max Martin/BSB songs. Overall i'd say it's not as good as Millenium, but better than Black & Blue (but that's as a whole. The first three songs on Black & Blue still remain my favorites.) oh and who's toine?

smartCurrent Music| BSB - All I Have to Give Well I'm winding down my time in Harrisonburg and Books-A-Million. Since I've been working there, i've borrowed 5 books. The first one was about Nirvana's recording sessions, and is discussed in an earlier entry of mine. Here are the other's. Book #2Roling With the Stones by Bill Wyman Supposed to be like the Beatles' awesome Anthology book. This is nowhere near as cool cuz 1) it's the Rolling Stones 2) it's only written by one Stone and 3) it's written by the non-coolest Stone. An interesting read at times, but got really boring, especially near the end when tours and years go by real fast. Book #3s by Chris Claremont & Jim Lee I discovered this treasure when i was voiding some graphic novels. This collects the first 7 X-Men comics from the early 1990s. Of course, back then, I was in full comic-craze, so i actually remembered the excitement of getting each of these comics when they ORINGINALLY came out. I remember discussing at length in ELP class how I had a comic that had the X-Men playing basketball WITH powers! yup, i was a fanboy. I haven't read these comics in forever, and it brought back some cool memories. The stories didn't hold up as amazingly as i remember, but they were actually decent to my 24-year old brain. Probably cuz it's Claremont. Lee's artwork still looks amazing. Book #4Angels & Demons by Dan Brown There is so much hype around this author, especially with his mega-hit, the Da Vinci Code (which i wont read before i see the movie.) The beginning of the book just jumps completely into the story, which was nice. Then it just keeps picking up, and becomes really engaging throughout, as we follow Langdon around Rome trying to descover where the next murder will happen before it happens. I loved that part. ...then the last 80 pages happens. These are so horrible. You think the story is over, but there's "a twist." It's so generic for mystery/thriller/adventure books (and especially movies, now) to have twists. i start trying to figure out the twist early on. Anyways, not only did i figure out one, i figured out 3 of them. That's not saying that i'm amazing and should be given an award (although that's fine too.) they were so easy to figure out. i'm sure alot of people figured out at least one of them, if not all of them. what a let down. Oh and the twists were dumb and unneccessary. Book #5 What's Your I.Q.? by Dr. Pamela A Horn I couldn't find a picture of this one. It's just a booklet of about 10 pages with a bunch of questions in it. I just finished filling it out, and found out my IQ is a 144 which is in the "exceptional" range on the back (only Gifted and Genius are above this - the score goes from 75-160.) I didnt use any calculators, all i used was a pad of paper (i couldnt even write on the book, since i'm borrowing it.) i did it all in one sitting too. i suggest everyone do this, i know i was dying to find out my IQ. i dont know how official this is though. oh well Book #6the Star Wars Trilogy by George Lucas, Donald F Glut & James Kahn This is the next (and most likely, last) book i'm going to borrow from BAM. It's the stories of the three first (read: good) movies - A New Hope, the Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi. I'm hoping for good things, since the movies rock and i haven't watched them in forever Comments: anonymous: Thanks Mr. VH1, don't know where we'd be without your lists.

angryCurrent Music| Led Zep - Kashmir oh man, i wish i was more of a dumb man. i went to a party with nate, his friend JC (female) and her friend John (male.) Anyways, while there i participated in a flip cup tournament, which my team won. on my team for one game was some guy in a green shirt and glasses. i didnt think anymore of him until i decided to leave a few hours later. on my way home, he and his friend decided to piss on the sidewalk - as i walked past them i said "well, guys. do what you gotta do." he took offense to this and tried to get up all into my face. i so could have took him. i'm not the most masculine, beat-up-other guys at all, but not only was this guy younger, but he was shorter and had glasses. before he left i had picked up two rocks hidden between my fists without him knowing. if i wanted to, i could have knocked him out. instead i decided to lessen the situation, and said "dude, i'm trying to difuse the situation. keep going" - i remember using the word "difuse." also luckily, his friend was on my side and tried to keep him going off in another direction. it's funny, apparently the little guy took offense to me saying what i did, thinking i was calling him a homosexual. why are guys so afraid of that term? does it undermind their heterosexuality? i dont get it - you can call me a homo all you want, as long as i know i'm a hetero i don't give a crap. guys are so afraid. oh well, i'm kinda glad it went nowhere - because if it did i would have had a bloody face tomorrow... oh, and the other guy would have been in the hospital. oh well, i dont consider myself a violent guy at all, but i seriously would have loved to wail on this kid just for being an idiot. i'm glad it worked out for both of us. sickCurrent Music| Foo Fighters - This is a Call ![]() So i bought the new Foo Fighter's CD today. It's called "In Your Honor" and is a double disc. the first one is "loud" and the second "not so loud." i had to walk 45 minutes to get it - walked from work, to the bank, and then to WalMart. I decided to take the "short cut" meaning a straight line, but that resulted in me going up and down mountains and through high, uncut grass fields. When i got home, i noticed that it wasn't going to run properly on my computer (stupid protected CDs...) but i finally figured out a way to rip the songs, so here we go. i'm not going to do a song-by song account. i'll just give a quick rundown of each "side" of the album. 1-The first half, the rocking side, is ... eh. i'll admit its not as horrible as the last foo fighters album, which had one or two ok songs, but nothing spectacular - even in foo terms. as soon as one song ends, and another begins, i've already forgotten what the last one sounded like. and dave's lyrics have gotten really ... um, boring. they're real generic "boy," if not emo just yet (he sure likes the word "dying.") i'm hearing so many old, 3rd album and 4th album melodies and ideas recycled here. 2-The second half, the softer side, fares alot better. the first song is nice (although creepy. it's about when he was younger and found parts of a dead body with his friends.) parts of these songs you kinda know whats going to happen right before they do. this side has alot more atmosphere then the first, and the songs breathe better. "friend of a friend" is a great inclusion - dave wrote it while living with kurt cobain after first joining nirvana. listen to the strumming... that's pure kurt! very emotional when dave sings "He plays an old guitar With a coin found by the phone It was his friend's guitar That he played When he plays No-one speaks..." Side two has some cool and interesting musical instrument accompianaments too. i understand that if this side was released as a single disc, the foo fighters would probably be raked over the coals a bit - but it'd be such a great risk and nice change of pace in that boring pathetic rock world out there right now. Dave. Man, i still think you're cool. You're still my second-fave drummer (second only to YOUR fave drummer, to boot.) But geez... come on. Remember that really awesome band you were in? i know you weren't the songwriter or singer, and it wasn't exactly "your vision" - but come on. i'm sure some things rubbed off on you. I mean... listen to your first 2 albums. those are cool. oh well. i guess it's cool that Mr. Grohl and company are doing what they want to do... it's just that what they do is pretty bland, drab brown. It's not horrible, it's just background rock music. i dont think it'll be the foo fighters' "Physical Graffitti" that Dave was looking for. ...Having said that. i still think the foo fighters are the best rock band out there that are 'modern.' i think Taylor and Dave are a really cool combo, and they seem to be having alot of fun, which makes me want to be in a band even more. Oh well, Dave's still the man. Reason? ![]()

Liesel said she can only go after the 12th, so we've huddled together and decided on weds, the 20th. Hopefully it'll work out, i know that we have everyone on board finally. I'll keep you guys updated cuz i know you're all on the edge of your seats! oh, and i only have a week left at work!!!
